Cork Trivets and Hot Pads: Sizes, Thickness and How to Choose

How to choose a cork trivet or hot pad: size by the base of the dish (Ø150–300 mm), thickness from 9 to 24 mm, shapes, care and why a trivet is not a pot holder.

Short answer: a cork trivet, also called a hot pad or pot stand, is a cork base you place under hot dishes and cookware to protect the table or worktop. Choose it by the base of the dish, not the width of the handles or rim, and pick a thicker cork profile when you want more material between the dish and the table. A cork trivet is a resting base, not a potholder: it is not meant for lifting cookware, and it should be kept away from open flames and direct heating elements.

Trivet, hot pad, pot stand or heat mat?

They are names for the same thing. “Trivet” and “hot pad” are common in the United States, “pot stand” in the United Kingdom, and “heat mat” is used in both. One term is different: in the US a “pot holder” usually means a fabric pad or mitt for gripping hot handles. A cork trivet does not replace that; it stays on the table.

Why cork works under hot dishes

  • Poor heat conductor: cork does not transfer heat easily, which is why it has been used under pots and dishes for generations.
  • Light and gentle on surfaces: cork is soft enough not to scratch most tables, yet firm enough to support a dish.
  • Natural and renewable: cork is the bark of the cork oak, harvested without cutting down the tree.

Choose the size by the base of the dish

Diameter Approx. in inches Typical use
Ø150 mm 5.9 in Teapots, small pots and bowls
Ø200 mm 7.9 in Everyday saucepans and casserole dishes
Ø245 mm 9.6 in Larger serving dishes
Ø300 mm 11.8 in Large cookware and serving platters

These are the four sizes of our classic Round Cork Trivet (9 mm). Make sure the base of the dish sits fully on the cork before you let go. If you serve several dishes at once, a set of graduated sizes, such as our Round Cork Trivet Set of 3 in 14, 18 and 22 cm, keeps the table coordinated.

Thickness: 9, 10, 20 or 24 mm

Thickness CorkMart examples When to choose it
9 mm Classic round, square and oval trivets Everyday use; light and easy to store
10 mm Round and square sets of 3 Coordinated sets for several dishes
20 mm Portuguese tile and sardine designs More cork under the dish and a decorative finish
24 mm Grooved cataplana trivet, Ø250 or Ø300 mm Heavy round cookware and serving pans

A thicker trivet simply puts more cork between the dish and the table. No maximum heat-resistance rating is stated for our trivets, so the same rules apply to every thickness: keep them away from open flames and direct heating elements, and never use them on a hob or burner.

Shapes and designs

Beyond the classic round, square and oval formats, cork trivets come in shapes that double as table decoration: animals, fish, fruit and leaves, moon phases and organic drop shapes, as well as Portuguese tile and sardine prints. The Cataplana Cork Trivet has a groove for round-based cookware such as the cataplana, the traditional Portuguese cooking pan. Decorative and shaped trivets are also a popular gift, especially in sets.

How to use and care for a cork trivet

  • Place it on a clean, dry and level surface before setting the dish down.
  • Check that the base of the dish is fully supported.
  • Do not use it to lift cookware, and keep it away from open flames and direct heating elements.
  • Wipe with a soft, lightly damp cloth and let it dry fully.
  • Avoid soaking, abrasive cleaning and the dishwasher.

Frequently asked questions

Are cork trivets heat resistant?

Cork is a poor conductor of heat, which is why it works well under hot dishes. No specific maximum temperature rating is stated for our trivets, so keep them away from open flames, burners and direct heating elements.

What is the difference between a trivet and a hot pad?

None in practice. Both are bases that sit under hot dishes. “Pot stand” and “heat mat” mean the same thing.

Can I use a cork trivet as a pot holder?

No. A cork trivet is a resting base for the table. Use oven gloves or a fabric pot holder to lift hot cookware.

What size cork trivet do I need?

Measure the base of the dish, not the handles or rim. Ø200 mm suits most everyday saucepans; choose Ø245 or Ø300 mm for larger dishes.

Can cork trivets go in the dishwasher?

No. Wipe them with a lightly damp cloth and let them dry fully.
