How to Choose Expanded Cork Insulation Board Thickness

Expanded cork insulation boards in different thicknesses for building projects

Choosing the right expanded cork insulation board thickness is one of the most important decisions in a cork insulation project. Thickness affects thermal comfort, acoustic support, build-up height, handling, shipping weight and the final installation method. There is no single correct thickness for every job: the best choice depends on where the board will be used and what the project is trying to improve.

Expanded cork insulation board, often called ICB, is made from cork granules that are expanded and bonded using the cork’s own natural resins during the production process. This gives the board its dark colour, porous structure and rigid but lightweight feel. Because it is a natural cork-based insulation material, it is commonly considered for walls, floors, roofs, studios, renovation work and sustainable building projects.

What thickness should you choose?

As a general rule, thinner boards are used when space is limited or when cork is being added as a lining or supporting layer. Medium boards are often selected for interior renovation and general insulation upgrades. Thicker boards are used when the main goal is stronger insulation build-up or a more demanding technical application.

The decision should always consider the full construction build-up. For example, a floor system may include a structural base, cork board, underlay or finish layer. A wall system may include masonry, cork board, adhesive or mechanical fixing, render, panel, plasterboard or another finish. The cork board does not work in isolation: it is part of the whole assembly.

Thin expanded cork boards

Thin boards are useful when the project needs a natural cork layer without adding too much depth. They may be chosen for interior lining, boards, small acoustic upgrades, furniture projects, model making, studio details or renovation areas where every millimetre matters.

They are easier to cut, easier to handle and usually easier to ship in smaller quantities. However, they should not be expected to perform like a much thicker insulation board. Their value is often in practicality, surface coverage and natural cork texture rather than maximum insulation build-up.

Medium thickness boards

Medium thicknesses are often the most balanced choice for many residential and studio applications. They provide more cork mass than thin boards while remaining manageable for transport and installation. This makes them a practical starting point for interior walls, floors, studio upgrades, workshops and renovation projects where the client wants meaningful material thickness but still needs a realistic build-up.

For sound-sensitive spaces such as home studios, offices or music rooms, medium boards can be part of a wider acoustic strategy. The final result will also depend on room shape, wall layers, gaps, air cavities, finishes and installation method.

Thicker boards for demanding projects

Thicker expanded cork boards are normally considered for projects where insulation is a primary objective. They can be used in more demanding wall, roof, façade or floor build-ups, subject to the project’s design and local building requirements.

Because thicker boards increase volume, shipping and handling become more important. For larger quantities, it is often better to request a freight quote rather than relying only on standard parcel checkout. Pallet freight may be more efficient for bulky orders, especially outside Portugal.

Questions to answer before ordering

  • Where will the board be installed? Wall, floor, roof, studio, workshop, interior lining or technical application.
  • What is the target? Thermal comfort, acoustic support, natural material choice, wall lining, impact reduction or project specification.
  • How much space is available? Consider the full build-up, including adhesive, fixings and finish layers.
  • How much area must be covered? Calculate square metres and include a small allowance for cuts and waste.
  • How will it be shipped? Small quantities may ship by parcel; bulky orders may need custom freight.

How CorkMart can help

If you are unsure which thickness to choose, send us the application, area in square metres, required thickness if known, destination country and project deadline. For B2B or construction quantities, include whether pallet delivery or terminal pickup is possible.
